History Of The Currywurst
Currywurst is one of Germany’s most iconic street foods, beloved for its bold, comforting flavors. It was invented shortly after World War II, in 1949, by a woman named Herta Heuwer in Berlin.
Legend has it that Herta got her hands on some ketchup and curry powder from British soldiers stationed in the city. She mixed them together to create a unique, spicy-sweet sauce, which she poured over grilled pork sausages. She first served her new creation at her food stand in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district — and it was an instant hit.
Affordable, hearty, and packed with flavor, currywurst quickly became a symbol of Germany’s rebuilding spirit and a beloved comfort food. Today, it’s estimated that over 800 million currywursts are eaten in Germany every year — with Berlin alone consuming tens of millions!
At Nick’s German Kitchen, we honor this delicious tradition by serving up currywurst the way it was meant to be: hearty, flavorful, and full of history.
Preparation
First, a pork knockwurst sausage is either grilled until it’s hot and slightly crispy on the outside. Once cooked, the sausage is typically sliced into bite-sized pieces.
Then comes the star: the curry ketchup sauce.
This sauce is usually made by blending ketchup or tomato paste with curry powder, and sometimes adding a little paprika, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, or sugar for extra depth and sweetness. The warm sauce is poured generously over the sliced sausage.
To finish, a dusting of extra curry powder is often sprinkled on top before serving.
Our Currywurst is paired with French fries, making it a hearty, satisfying meal!
